Description
SINGER OIL/OLD KRAFTSMAN 5 STRING CANJO-BANJO.
Y’all got a squeaky singer in the band?
This here canjo/banjo could be just what you need!
Of course I don’t suggest rubbing Singer Oil on anyone, but the joke is worth the price of admission.
This 5 string Canjo/Banjo is a combination of 2antiques.
I just don’t know when the Singer Sewing Machine folks last sold lubricant in one gallon steel cans, but my guess is it was a while ago.
Any one familiar with stringed instruments will recognize the peg-head of the 5-stringneck as being from an Old Kraftsman (also Kay) banjo probably built sometime from the late 1930’s into the late 1940’s, more or less.
This banjo measures about 36 inches overall and has 21 frets.
The fret board measures 19 ½ inch long, its 1 1/8 atthe nut and 1 5/8 at its end.
The can contains 1 US Gallon,or 3.785 liters and measures about 9 1/2 inch tall, 6 9/16 inch wide and 4 1/8inch deep, give or take.
The tuners seem to be original, the tail piece and bridge are new parts, 5 years ago.
The neck was drilled at its heel and fitted with a threaded insert.
A threaded steel rod was screwed into the insert and passes through the can in the manner of a traditional dowel rod and is locked down with a nut on the tail piece.
The cork seal is still in the cap on the can.
I assembled all of this about 5 years ago.
This instrument comes with no case.
Although I play finger style guitar, I am NO banjo player.
I can do a “fair” claw hammer style and by my ear this canjo seems to keep up OK, but this is NO guarantee of anything.
Additional specific pictures upon request.
I will answer any questions you may have.
That said, given the age and type of this instrument, it is sold “AS IS”, with no guarantee or warranty implied or offered.
No returns or refunds will be considered for any reason.
